Afro Samba – The National Dance of Brazil
This class is an excursion into the polyrhythm of Samba – the dance of life. Samba has its origins in Africa, and was brought to Brazil by enslaved African people from both Angola and the DRC (formerly known as Zaire,) first to the North East of Brazil. We will primarily focus on understanding the many styles of samba and their origin within Brazil. Simultaneously, we’ll work on strengthening the body, developing presence, learning how to use space, learning how to hear the rhythm, and identifying the artists who create the music. The class is a mixed level class that begins with a warm-up & isolations, center floor, across the floor, combos and ending class with a Roda de Samba. Come ready to work and have fun!
